My main area of focus is on helping individuals and organizations get from where they are to where they want to be. I rely heavily on the work of William Bridges, one of the true experts on transition work. Along the journey, I also met Barbara Beizer and both she and Bridges are sages I interviewed for Leading with Wisdom. I was sad when I discovered Bridges had died in 2013 at the age of 80. Such a wise, kind, and generous man. In fact, the first time I interviewed him was not enough! I conducted a follow up interview with him because I had so much to learn and he was so willing to share his wisdom with me.
If you are a reader of my blog, you know one of the areas on which I focus is sage-ing(C) or positive aging. After years of immersing myself in this work by reading, interviewing, and observing, one of my main conclusions is that aging is about meaning and purpose. Positive aging or aging gracefully is always maintaining a purpose and meaning so that we have–as Richard Leider says: a reason to get up in the morning.
I came across a wonderful story of Sarah Oliver Handbags in a blog by Dr. Bill Thomas, author of Second Wind. Sarah Oliver that incorporates utilizing the skills of people regardless of their age into a thriving business. The bottom-line is that everyone wins! I encourage you to read/listen to the story of how Sarah Oliver makes her unique handbags (I am saving my money to own one.) The Purlettes + 1 is an inspirational story that has me thinking about all of the possibilities! The photography is wonderful and it is fun getting to know the Purlettes + 1.
The goal is to continue to use the skills that we enjoy.
What else could be done with the skills that are plentiful if we look around?
What other business opportunities could be created where everyone wins?
